For pure athleticism, Shawn Kemp was a stud. Total package of skills though.... sheesh... i'd go with Tim Duncan, as much as I can't stand the Spurs...

Karl Malone would be a close second, followed by Barkley... I always hated the Jazz as well, but Malone was frustratingly good... For being just unded 6'5" at power forward, Barkley's ability to dominate the post and the glass was pretty amazing...]]>

But that doesn't mean Hall, 28, has put his four years of military service behind him. Especially on a day like today.

“Memorial Day means a lot to me,” he said Thursday, just after the Titans completed the first day of their first mini-camp combining rookies and veterans. “My main focus is all the guys who have died for our freedom.”

So when the Marines asked Hall to help open their new recruiting office today in Franklin, Tenn., he asked only what time they needed him to be there. He also intended to visit a veterans’ hospital over the weekend, as well as phoning several friends he'd served with abroad.

“I've already sent C.A.R.E. packages to several guys,” he added. “There's never a day that goes by that I don't think about them. Not a day. Those four years are always with me.”

Becoming a Marine was not Hall's lifelong dream. He grew up in Texas, after all, emotionally blinded by Friday night football lights.

“I was your typical jock,” he said. “Just going through the motions academically. I thought I could sweet-talk my teachers. Just do the bare minimum. I was visiting big-time programs. I just knew I was going to play big-time college football. But nobody can take the SAT or ACT for you.”

Hall couldn't pass either standardized test. Without the necessary scores he would be forced to attend junior college for a year or two before signing with a Division I school.

“But I couldn't see myself playing college football on a high school field, which is where a lot of junior colleges play,” he said. “So I joined the Marines. Probably the best thing that ever happened to me.”

He was assigned to Comm Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines out of Camp Lejeune, N.C. Hall's wife, Juana, also served four years in the Marines.

“There were 73 guys in my platoon,” said Hall. “A lot were injured, but they're all still alive. Fifteen are still serving. It can be a tough life. A lot of families are torn apart. It's hard. But you become friends for life.”

After four years of active duty, Hall decided he had served enough. He would give college football one last try. Thanks to the GI Bill he was able to walk on at Texas, which was about to be led by a stunning quarterback named Vince Young.

“You can have a hard time transitioning back to civilian life,” Hall said. “But football was fairly easy once I got out there. And I was very focused. I had a kid by then. I had a little extra drive to succeed. I wasn't getting caught up in a lot of things that distract a college freshman.”

One of his toughest civilian adjustments was deciding how to approach the National Anthem before games. Should he pop to attention? Should he put his helmet over his heart? Should he stand silently?

“That song really means a lot to me,” he said. “I can't hear it and not think about all the men and women who have died for this country.”

His patriotism aside, what impressed the Texas coaches the most was Hall's ability to block for Young. Hall became the starting fullback for the Longhorns’ 2006 national championship team. His skills and his age convinced him to enter the supplemental draft. With encouragement from Young, he landed with the Titans.

Hall admits to looking over his shoulder during the entirety of his Texas career and his first season with the Titans. Though he had served four active years with the Marines, he was on an inactive list for four more years. He could have been called back to active duty at any time.

“I was definitely nervous,” said Hall. “But they never called.”

Some of his best friends from the Marines still call for tickets. “They don't care about catching up wth me,” he grinned. “They just want to meet Vince.”

Everybody wants to meet Young. Men, women, children. It has made him rich and famous. It has also brought him a bit of unwelcome attention on Deadspin.com, where photos of Young partying hard with a few of his former Longhorns teammates recently surfaced.

“I know I'm supposed to be a role model,” Young said last week. “That comes with being a pro quarterback. That's the life I chose. But if the kids want a real role model to look up to they should look at the Big Marine.”

“I was your typical jock,” he said. “Just going through the motions academically. I thought I could sweet-talk my teachers. Just do the bare minimum. I was visiting big-time programs. I just knew I was going to play big-time college football. But nobody can take the SAT or ACT for you.”

Hall couldn't pass either standardized test. Without the necessary scores he would be forced to attend junior college for a year or two before signing with a Division I school.

“But I couldn't see myself playing college football on a high school field, which is where a lot of junior colleges play,” he said. “So I joined the Marines. Probably the best thing that ever happened to me.”

He was assigned to Comm Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines out of Camp Lejeune, N.C. Hall's wife, Juana, also served four years in the Marines.

“There were 73 guys in my platoon,” said Hall. “A lot were injured, but they're all still alive. Fifteen are still serving. It can be a tough life. A lot of families are torn apart. It's hard. But you become friends for life.”

After four years of active duty, Hall decided he had served enough. He would give college football one last try. Thanks to the GI Bill he was able to walk on at Texas, which was about to be led by a stunning quarterback named Vince Young.

“You can have a hard time transitioning back to civilian life,” Hall said. “But football was fairly easy once I got out there. And I was very focused. I had a kid by then. I had a little extra drive to succeed. I wasn't getting caught up in a lot of things that distract a college freshman.”

One of his toughest civilian adjustments was deciding how to approach the National Anthem before games. Should he pop to attention? Should he put his helmet over his heart? Should he stand silently?

“That song really means a lot to me,” he said. “I can't hear it and not think about all the men and women who have died for this country.”

His patriotism aside, what impressed the Texas coaches the most was Hall's ability to block for Young. Hall became the starting fullback for the Longhorns’ 2006 national championship team. His skills and his age convinced him to enter the supplemental draft. With encouragement from Young, he landed with the Titans.

Hall admits to looking over his shoulder during the entirety of his Texas career and his first season with the Titans. Though he had served four active years with the Marines, he was on an inactive list for four more years. He could have been called back to active duty at any time.

“I was definitely nervous,” said Hall. “But they never called.”

Some of his best friends from the Marines still call for tickets. “They don't care about catching up wth me,” he grinned. “They just want to meet Vince.”

Everybody wants to meet Young. Men, women, children. It has made him rich and famous. It has also brought him a bit of unwelcome attention on Deadspin.com, where photos of Young partying hard with a few of his former Longhorns teammates recently surfaced.

“I know I'm supposed to be a role model,” Young said last week. “That comes with being a pro quarterback. That's the life I chose. But if the kids want a real role model to look up to they should look at the Big Marine.”

Especially on a day like today.

JR messed up and calls is the Pepsi Arena instead of the Pepsi Center. The Pepsi Arena used to be in Albany, NY but they sold the name rights last year so it's now called the Times Union Center. The Pepsi CENTER is where they were last night. He mentions that the show is sold out.

Vince McMahon is on the tron. Last week, Regal got what he deserved. But are we getting what we deserve? We deserve the action, the excitement and the drama. And we deserve appreciation. And he will show us appreciation. He has an idea. He wants ideas from our Superstars too. Before the show is over, he will show us appreciation even if it means he has to do something that's never been done before in the history of the WWE.

John Travolta and Nicolas Cage are here. Alternatively, Triple H is out. Shortly followed by Randy Orton. We've got the whole red carpet and podiums deal going on and JR and King put over the pair's Last Man Standing match from last October. Orton's new theme is actually a really good fit and for those that are still asking, it's called Voices and it's by Rev Theory, WWE's new favourite band (they did the Mania and One Night Stand theme and Ashley has appeared in one of their videos). I don't know whether it's the new music or the lack of championship gold, but Orton's posing again and I approve. T-Grish asks Orton what makes him think he can beat The Game on Sunday. Orton says that's typical. Why is it that people always downplay he is accomplishments. Fair counterpoint, Randall. How come no one can just say "Orton has beaten everyone there is to beat"? Sunday, the joke is over and the laughing will stop. Triple H says these people laugh at him because he's a… I don't know, they blanked it out. But Trips knows how good Orton is, more than Orton does. That's knowledge. That's why Orton always looks for the cheap way out. Every time he said how great he was, he looked like he was trying to convince himself. He sees Orton as a scared little boy in a man's world. If you want to be the best, you have to thrive on competition and you have to rise on the occasion. Orton wants a break. "You do not thrive on competition, Triple H." Kendrick elbows out but the Sliced Bread is countered, but Kendrick avoids a crossbody. Hot tag both sides and London knocks Holly down with a pair of dropkicks and gets a standing head scissors. London gets caught but sunset flips Holly for 2. A heel kick gets 2 more. Kendrick and Rhodes get dumped, London skins the cat but gets caught with the Alabama Slam for 3!

They work a couple of counterholds and side headlock takeovers and stand off to cheers for both men. Michaels goes to the arm but Jericho counters and gains control of Shawn's limb and wrenches it. Shawn gets a hip toss now but runs into a hard elbow from Jericho and that's going to sting. Jericho tries a springboard dropkick to the apron but Shawn avoids it and Jericho crashes and burns on the floor as we go to break. Back from the break, and Jericho has Shawn in a chinlock with a half nelson. Shawn elbows his way to separation and hits some chops, blocks a hip toss and catches Jericho with a backslide for 2. Both men up and Jericho hits a step-up enzuigiri for 2. Into the corner now and Jericho gets a couple of shoulder thrusts and the referee is all over Jericho here. Shawn gets a hip toss now but runs into a hard elbow from Jericho and that's going to sting. Jericho tries a springboard dropkick to the apron but Shawn avoids it and Jericho crashes and burns on the floor as we go to break. Back from the break, and Jericho has Shawn in a chinlock with a half nelson. Shawn elbows his way to separation and hits some chops, blocks a hip toss and catches Jericho with a backslide for 2. Both men up and Jericho hits a step-up enzuigiri for 2. Into the corner now and Jericho gets a couple of shoulder thrusts and the referee is all over Jericho here. Y2J chokes HBK out with a boot in the corner. Shawn counters Jericho's version of a bulldog by forcing him into the turnbuckles. Inverted atomic drop now by Shawn, followed up the flying forearm… KIP UP! Jericho catches and tires for the Walls but Shawn counters to a small package for 2. Both up and Jericho levels Shawn with a clothesline, but the Lionsault misses. Shawn up top… elbow drop misses! Jericho is poised and wants the Codebreaker I think, but Shawn blocks it by holding on to the top. The band us tuning up ever so slight, Jericho ducks the kick has there's the WALLS OF JERICHO! It's locked in and Shawn crawls towards the ropes… and he has it. Jericho eventually breaks the hold. He puts the boots to Shawn and gets pulled away by the ref… Shawn feigns a kick and Jericho dodges it, and kicks Shawn out to the floor. Jericho locks the WALLS OF JERICHO in on the floor! The ref is counts both men out and that's bull.

Double Count-Out

Jericho continues the assault on the floor and reapplies the Walls. Jericho has a chair and wants to hit Michaels with it… but doesn't. Jericho offers a hand to pull Shawn up and Shawn takes it eventually. Jericho throws the chair down and walks away.

One idea being thrown around is a heel stable composed of a group of younger WWE wrestlers. Also, they would use an older wrestler or a manager as a mentor. One idea is to make it a second generation stable featuring Ted DiBiase, Jr., Afa, Jr., DH Smith, Cody Rhodes (who would turn heel), and maybe Carlito as the mouthpiece if they don't get a manager. However, it may not be a 100% second generation stable after all, as other names being tossed around include CM Punk and Chris Harris. Once again NFL commissioner Roger Goodell seems intent on breaking with the head-in-the-sand approach of his predecessor, Paul Tagliabue.

For years as drunkenness and violence escalated at NFL stadiums the league's policy was, uh, good luck with that.

But on Thursday Goodell announced he will be issuing a fan conduct policy that will hopefully forestall the nuclear option of banning alcohol at NFL games. After all, of the many revenue streams in pro sports, can any possibly be as lucrative as the stream of domestic beer selling for $8 a cup?

"We want everyone to be able to come to our stadiums, behave properly, enjoy this experience but don't ruin it for others," said Goodell. "We will be focusing on that, including the implementation of an NFL fan conduct policy which we will have out prior to the season."

If Goodell's new policy holds franchises accountable for the conduct of their fans — the way he will now hold them financially accountable for the behavior of their players — you can bet teams will crack down in a meaningful way.

McAfee Coliseum in Oakland and Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego might as well be octagons for all the impromptu mixed martial arts that break out when the Bolts and Raiders throw down. But unconscionable fan behavior is not a recent development.


I understand the severe things and it does need to be addressed in some places, but he is policing so much it makes me wonder where he will stop.]]>
